Solar Power from Our Nearest Star Helps Power Planetarium to View Distant Stars
Soenso Energy Supplies Solar PV for Tellus Northwest Georgia Science Museum, Cartersville, Georgia
ATLANTA, GA, February 25, 2009 /Museums PR News/ -- A total of sixty Evergreen Solar photovoltaic (PV) modules has been installed on five towers in a courtyard outside the new Tellus Northwest Georgia Science Museum in Cartersville, Georgia. This solar PV array, supplied by Soenso Energy of Marietta, Georgia, is a 10kW system that produces about 1120kWh/month of clean electricity. This is enough electricity to offset the power used to operate the museum's planetarium projector.
In Georgia, coal accounts for approximately sixty-four percent of the fuel mix used by utilities to generate electricity (Source: U. S. EPA). By partially powering the new Tellus Museum with 1120kWh per month of clean, solar-generated electricity, this new photovoltaic system will have these positive effects on our environment:
• Prevent an estimated 21,309 pounds of carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere
each year
• Is comparable to about 22.5 barrels of oil not imported each year
• Is the equivalent to roughly 2.2 acres of pine forest storing carbon each year
Located just off I-75, Exit 293, Cartersville, Bartow County, Georgia, Tellus Northwest Georgia Science Museum is only forty-five miles northwest of downtown Atlanta. The 120,000 square foot museum features The Weinman Mineral Gallery, The Fossil Gallery, Science in Motion, The Collins Family My Big Backyard and a 120-seat planetarium with a state-of-the-art 20-inch telescope.
